Every day in August, The Salt Lake Tribune staff will select a different frozen confection for readers to try. We will taste our way through ice cream, gelato, frozen yogurt, shave ice and any other treats that will help us beat the heat. Today's pick:

Frozen hot chocolate • A cool blend of shave ice, ice cream and, according to the server, a "secret ingredient" that gives it a smooth chocolatey flavor. Topped with whipped cream, this drink is as comforting as its winter counterpart.

Island Flavor Shaved Ice Truck • 4720 S. Holladay Blvd., Holladay (in front of Rite Aid); 801-856-1212. Open Monday- Saturday, noon to 10 p.m.

Price • Small, medium, extra-medium or large cups $2-$3.50; frozen hot chocolate is $4.

Shop talk • I was introduced to this popular shave-ice truck — which operates out of an old green van — by two reliable sources: my daughter, Ellen, and her cousin Michael. They hit the truck at least once a week to satisfy their craving for the creamy chocolate-coconut "Almond Joy" shave ice. This truck has dozens of flavors to mix and match from strawberry to tiger's blood. But its specialty is the typhoon — shave ice blended with ice cream.
