Food and flower events: Taste of the Wasatch fundraiser, plus Olympic food fest, and wildflower class

Taste of the Wasatch

Tickets are available for Taste of the Wasatch, a culinary fundraiser for Utahns Against Hunger. The event, previously called Taste of the Nation, features food from more than 50 restaurants and resorts, as well as offering samples of craft beer and boutique wines. There will be live music and both a live and silent auction. All proceed stay in Utah to help fight hunger.

Olympic food fit for queen

The Escala Provisions Co. in Park City will celebrate the start of the 2012 London Olympics by offering English feasts fit for the Queen. For breakfast, the restaurant inside the Hyatt Escala Lodge will serve English bangers and mash, eggs, chai tea porridge with Devonshire cream, and roasted local tomatoes. High Tea will include a finger sandwiches with Utah trout, cucumbers, egg and watercress, curried chicken salad and Brie and apricot compote. Dinner is all-you-can eat fish and chips.

Zy chef offers class

Chef Matt Lake at Zy Food, Wine & Cheese will show guests how to prepare two of the downtown Salt Lake City restaurant's signature dishes: scallops with almond, curry and red wine reduction, and pecan pork with wild mushrooms and sautéed greens. Attendees will get to sample what is prepared and take home recipes.

Iris, daylilies for sale

Intensive breeding has transformed the iris and the daylily from a garden's supporting players to divas, and the newer varieties of the flowers offer better texture, form and color. These flowers will be offered at special prices at a salt and auction sponsored by the Utah Iris Society, American Iris Society and Utah Daylily Society.

Snowbasin wildflower tour

Ride the gondola to the top of Snowbasin Ski Resort where instructors will teach how to identify and photograph wildflowers. Price includes instruction, gondola ride, a copy of the book Wildflowers of the Mountain West, plus drinks and snacks. Sponsored by the Ogden Botanical Gardens

Chocolate lovers night

Local chocolatier Shirl Shepherd, owner of Pa's Chocolates, will offer a workshop on making chocolates and demonstrate chocolate-dipping techniques. Participants will get a hands-on lesson, as well as the chance to make chance and eat their own chocolate creation.

$5 appetizers at Oyster Bar

The Market Street Oyster Bars in Salt Lake City, Cottonwood and South Jordan are offering $5 appetizers everyday from 4 to 6 p.m. and after 8:30 p.m. The "5 for $5" menu includes: jumbo shrimp cocktail, hot spinach, crab and artichoke dip; crab-stuffed mushrooms; fried calamari; and hickory-smoked salmon. Also, on Mondays, fresh oysters are half-price all day. Raw oysters on the half shell are served on ice with choice of cocktail sauce, horseradish, mignonette sauce and lemon.
