Buddhists at Salt Lake City's Urgyen Samten Ling Tibetan Buddhist Temple pray for compassion on behalf of all sentient beings, with continuous ceremonies and mantra recitations that began Thursday and culminate on Sunday, with an 11 a.m. ceremony.

Members of the temple, 740 S. 300 West, offer the prayer session annually in honor of Chenrezig, the Buddhist embodiment of compassion, who is also known as Avalokiteshvara.

Their 67-hour, around-the-clock recitation of the mantra ``Om Mane Padme Hung Hrih'' also celebrates the July 6 birthday of the Dalai Lama, the 77-year-old spiritual leader whom Tibetan Buddhists believe to be Chenrezig's principal reincarnation.
