Tumbleweeds opens with Disney doc ‘Chimpanzee’

A little chimp will lead off Salt Lake City’s second annual Tumbleweeds Film Festival, dedicated to movies for young audiences.

The Utah Film Center announced that DisneyNature’s documentary "Chimpanzee" will be the opening-night film for Tumbleweeds, screening March 23 at the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center in downtown Salt Lake City.

Directed by Alistair Fothergill and Mark Linfield, the team who made the award-winning "Earth," centers on a young chimp dubbed Oscar who makes his way through the rain forests of Africa.

The movie is scheduled for national release on April 20, ahead of Earth Day.

Tumbleweeds’ closing-night film, on March 25, will be "David," a drama about an 11-year-old Muslim boy growing up -- and learning about tolerance -- in Brooklyn. The movie is directed by Joel Fendelman.
