Move
Why
People are healthier if they exert calories throughout the day by walking, gardening or doing chores. That’s better than sitting for long periods of time and then having a burst of physical activity at the gym, according to researchers at the University of Southern Carolina.
How
Get up once an hour » Climb the stairs, walk around the block or simply go get the mail.
Skip the labor-saving devices » Do the dishes, cut vegetables or mix cake batter by hand. The calories burned are small (26 for hand-washing dishes), but it adds up to as many as 11 pounds per year.
Wear a pedometer » Aim for 10,000 steps a day.
Fidget more » Studies show that some people are naturally fidgety, which means they simply get up and move around more.
