After months of planning, remodeling and menu development, Plum Alley, the newest restaurant from chef Ryan Lowder, will open on Friday, Dec. 16.

Plum Alley is next to Lowder's first Utah restaurant, The Copper Onion, at 111 E. 300 South. (Formerly, Sicilia Pizza).

Named after the street where Utah's Chinatown once was located, Plum Alley will specialize in small plates with the flavor of Southeast Asia. The menu includes items such as green papaya salad (pictured here), homemade noodles, pork buns, curries, kimchi and dtom ka gai soup. Appetizers start at $2; small plates and other items from $5 to $13.

If you go, plan on a casual and social evening, as the restaurant features long communal tables as well as a counter and bar. Wine, beer and spirits are available.

Ryan Lamon will head the Plum Alley kitchen. He has been The Copper Onion's sous chef since Jan. of 2010 and has previous experience preparing Asian food.

Initially, the restaurant will be open Tuesday-Saturday from 5 to 11 p.m. for dinner only.

In mid-January, the restaurant will be open for dinner seven days a week. Lunch service is expected to be added in March.
