Type 1 diabetes can occur in any child at any age, even in babies and toddlers. So as part of National Diabetes Awareness Month, the Utah Department of Health (UDOH) is urging parents to learn the signs and symptoms so children can be diagnosed as early as possible. Leaving diabetes unchecked can lead to a potentially life-threatening condition called diabetic ketoacidosis or DKA. Your child might have Type 1 diabetes if he or she:
Feels very thirsty all the time
Passes urine frequently and wets the bed
Experiences weight loss
Has excessive, unexplained tiredness
Has blurred vision
Has sweet or fruity-smelling breath.
