Utah Jazz notes: Against Warriors, Utah has chance to help itself

Any Warriors’ loss can help the Jazz move up with Golden State’s first-round draft pick.

When Utah and Golden State get together Friday night, there will be some extra incentive for the Jazz.

The Jazz own the rights to four Warrior draft picks over the next four seasons — thanks to a July trade that sent Richard Jefferson, Andris Biedrins and Brandon Rush to Utah, helping Golden State clear the cap space to acquire Andre Iguodala — and almost any Golden State loss would be a chance to improve future draft position.

The first of those picks will come later this year, with the Jazz owning Golden State’s first-rounder. The Warriors record, 27-19 as of Friday, would put the pick at 22nd overall. But Jazz coach Ty Corbin isn’t paying much mind to that right now.

"Not at this juncture," he said. "The guys upstairs have a feel for that stuff and they pay more attention than I do. We’ve got so many things on the floor to worry about right now, we just worry about who we are."

Utah also owns Golden State’s first-round pick in 2017 and second round-picks in 2016 and 2017.

Call me maybe

After two straight appearances in the Slam Dunk contest, including one championship, Jeremy Evans hasn’t heard from the league about this year’s event.

He’s not pressing the issue, but he hasn’t given up hope either.

"I’ll just see if they’re going to call me up," he said. "The last couple years, it’s been the last week or two they call me. I thought why [would it be different this year] if they do call?"

The event will be held on Feb. 15 in New Orleans.

Asked if he had a dunk prepared just in case, Evans smiled and said, "I’m not going to say I’m ready, but I can always prepare."

Bugged

After missing practice Wednesday with a sore right hip, forward Derrick Favors was a partial participant in practice Thursday. Point guard Trey Burke and Jefferson, meanwhile, both sat out with what the team called "gastric distress." All three players will be game-time decisions Friday.
