San Antonio • The Jazz battled back from a 19-point deficit to go into the fourth quarter tied with the team that swept them from the playoffs last year, but they could not keep up with Tim Duncan and the Spurs, losing 110-100.
Mo Williams led the Jazz, who fell to 1-2 to start the season, with 29 points, including 11 that came amid a 13-0 run to close the third quarter than saw the Jazz turn a 79-66 deficit into a tie game.
The Jazz kept pace throughout the final period, but Paul Millsap was called for a three-seconds violation with 3:36 left that negated a 3-pointer by Gordon Hayward which would have cut the Spurs’ lead to 99-97.
Williams, scored 15 points in the third quarter, including nine straight to close it out. The loss mitigated his best game as a member of the Jazz, in which he was 9-of-13 from the field and perfect in nine free-throw attempts.
Tony Parker led the Spurs with 24 points, Danny Green added 21 and Tim Duncan scored 19, including seven in the fourth quarter.
The Jazz wrap up their road trip on Monday in Memphis before returning home for a Wednesday game against the Lakers at EnergySolutions Arena.
