Washington • Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman's presidential campaign raised $4.1 million in the nine days since he formally entered the race, though about half of the funds came from the millionaire's own pockets, a campaign official said Thursday night.

Huntsman said previously that he threw some of his own fortune into the campaign to "prime the pump" and help get it started.

The candidate raised $1.2 million on his first day in the race, the campaign reported, but more detailed figures on his fundraising won't be known until October, when Huntsman will have to file a report with the Federal Elections Commission.

Huntsman entered the race late enough in the second-quarter period that he doesn't have to file with the FEC until the third quarter.

The campaign's initial fundraising haul is far less than some of the other major candidates in the race and could put him at a distinct disadvantage moving forward.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney raised between $15 million and $20 million in the second quarter, according to published reports. During his initial quarter in his 2008 presidential bid, Romney raised nearly $21 million and forked over $2 million of his fortune.

Huntsman, who hails from a wealthy family and has worked at various times in the Huntsman Corp., is worth up to $70 million, according to his most recent personal financial disclosure from 2009.
