Community events to mark a memorable Memorial Day

Communities throughout Utah will celebrate Memorial Day with patriotic events and military ceremonies. Here's a sampling of planned events.

Hill Air Force Base Thunderbirds

The Air Force's Thunderbirds will perform in the skies over Hill Air Force Base at various times throughout the weekend. Activities include viewing vintage planes and sky-diving demonstrations.

When • Saturday and Sunday, May 26-27, 10 a.m.

Also • Utah Transit Authority will provide a park-and-ride shuttle service between the Clearfield FrontRunner Station at 1250 S. State St., and Hill Air Force Base. Round-trip fare is $3; free for FrontRunner passengers with stamped Saturday tickets; hours are 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Salt Lake Bees: Military Appreciation Night

Military personnel receive two-for-one tickets as the Salt Lake Bees face the Las Vegas 51s. Fireworks will begin after the game.

Memorial Day breakfast: Herriman

Herriman city will host a chuckwagon breakfast.

Tickets • $5 for large plate and $3 for a junior plate

Memorial Day tribute: Herriman

The Riverton American Legion Post 140 will honor veterans who have passed on with a free program of patriotic music and poetry. There will be a reading of veteran names, a 21-gun salute and the playing of "Taps."

Big Memorial Weekend

BigM Weekend mixes motorcycles, music and military, and the event will feature the FIM Superbike World Championship. Military personnel will receive a 50 percent ticket discount.

When • Saturday, May 26, 8:45 a.m.-5:30 p.m.; Sunday, May 27, 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m.; Monday, May 28, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Memorial Day program: Cedar City

Cedar City will hold a Memorial Day Recognition and Veterans Memorial Service at the Cedar City Cemetery. The ceremony will include a piper drum and bagpipe band, military salute, flag raising and lowering, and a speech by an honored veteran.

Memorial Day program: Bluffdale

Bluffdale city will sponsor a program with the Patriot Guard Riders of Utah, the Ogden High School JROTC Armed rifle exhibition team, Salt Lake Scots Bagpipers, 65th Fires Brigade and the Unified Police of Salt Lake Valley.

Memorial Day ceremony: Fort Douglas

There will be a program at the Fort Douglas Cemetery on Monday morning.

Memorial Day program: American Fork

The American Fork City and the American Fork Cemetery Committee's joint program will follow the theme "Heroes Among Us," featuring city resident Craig Roberts, with music by the American Fork High School Jazz and marching bands.

Memorial Day tribute: West Jordan

West Jordan will hold its traditional holiday tribute at the Military Services Monument. Events include a fallen soldiers memorial with flower placement by state and local leaders, rifle salute, and a ceremony emceed by KSL's Doug Wright.

Military Appreciation Night: West Valley City

Young Chevrolet will sponsor the Military Appreciation Night at Rocky Mountain Raceways. Active military personnel and veterans get in free; accompanying family members get in for half-price. For information call 801-252-9557.

Caring Connections: Larkin Memorial Day Program

Caring Connections' Memorial Day service will feature as guest speakers Utah Rep. Jim Matheson and Lt. Col. Pete Adams. The Minuteman Brass Quintet and the Wasatch & District Pipe Band will perform.

Memorial Day Celebration: Kaysville

A Memorial Day program will be presented at the Kaysville City cemetery featuring the Davis High School drum line, American Legion Post 27 flag ceremony, and speaker, E. LaMar Buckner, a World War II B-17 pilot. This will be held on the south end of the Cemetery.
