Police shot and killed a man suspected of robbing a Salt Lake City bank after a pursuit down 400 South on Friday.

The shooting occurred around 5:30 p.m. near 400 South and 1600 West, said Lt. Melody Gray of the Salt Lake City Police Department.

Just after 5 p.m., officers responded to a report of an armed bank robbery at a Zions Bank at 400 South and 700 East, Gray said. A man entered the bank with a gun and demanded money. He fled in a black SUV driven by a woman, police said.

Shortly after that, the SUV was spotted on 400 South near 800 West by an officer who attempted to stop it. A chase ensued, police said.

Around 5:30 p.m., a black SUV sped down 400 South followed by two police cars, said Alan Hildenbrand, a house painter working near the scene. The police officers used a PIT maneuver to stop the fleeing SUV, and it came to a stop on the wrong side of the street around 1600 West, near Edison Elementary School.

One person jumped out of the SUV, which had hopped the curb and came to a rest on the sidewalk. The man ran onto the property of an apartment complex with police in pursuit, Hildenbrand said.

Gray said police pursued the man into the apartment complex's courtyard near brightly colored playground equipment.

Police officers shouted at the man to stop, then Hildenbrand heard three to five shots.

Hildenbrand later saw the man on the ground with an injury to his chest. He said paramedics were treating the man.

The man was transported to a hospital, where he died, police said. Police will not identify the man until they have notified next of kin.

Police said the other person remained in the SUV, and they do not know whether the person was a suspect or a witness.

Streets in the area were blocked to traffic for several hours Friday evening.

The shooting is under investigation by Salt Lake City Police Department homicide investigators and the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office.
