HB113 • A bill aimed at stopping people who obtain "payday loans" from spiraling into uncontrolled debt was killed by a House committee on Wednesday.

HB113 by Rep. Brad Daw, R-Orem, would have created a database of people who have a payday loan or who are in default on one. Once listed, no payday lender in Utah could give people on the list another payday loan.

The House Business and Labor Committee voted 9-4 to kill the bill, after several committee members said government should not need to protect consumers from themselves.

"You're asking me to safeguard someone from poor choices?" asked Rep Francis Gibson, R-Mapleton.
