Longtime KUER newscaster and reporter Dan Bammes is taking a leave of absence from the National Public Radio affiliate to be treated for cancer.

Bammes, who has been at the University of Utah-based radio station since 2002, hosted the local newscast during NPR's "Morning Edition" and reported on state government and the Utah Legislature.

Bammes said he has been suffering from multiple myeloma for several years, but the disease has been in remission since a stem-cell transplant in 2003.

"I relapsed last year," Bammes said. "When I had a checkup in January, they decided I need treatment again, but there was no hurry."

He will undergo stem-cell treatment at the Huntsman Cancer Center and expects to be back on the air in July.

Bob Nelson, an experienced broadcaster who is continuing his education at the University of Utah, will fill in for Bammes. "We were lucky enough to have Bob to help us out on a part-time basis," Bammes said.

Bammes, 54, began his career in 1974 at KEYY in Provo and was well-known locally for the "Jon [Carter] and Dan Show" on KRSP-FM in the 1980s.
