Salt Lake City police Detective Dennis McGowan said the boy’s immediate future would be determined by a juvenile justice court judge this week.

Meanwhile, the boy’s stepfather — stabbed as he allegedly tried to break up a fight between the 12-year-old and a brother — was serious but stable condition at Intermountain Medical Center on Tuesday.
Police say the 12-year-old and his brother were fighting over food inside their home near 800 West and 500 South about 9:25 a.m. Monday when the boy’s stepfather tried to separate the two.
The 12-year-old grabbed the knife and stabbed the man in the back, police said. The boy ran, but was captured a few blocks away by police officers.
