Cedar City police said Wednesday that a man who shot himself during a standoff with SWAT officers later died of his injuries.

Cedar City police Sgt. J.R. Robinson said Evan Wilcock II, 40, of Cedar City, died at Valley View Medical Center about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday. Wilcock shot himself in the stomach with a high-caliber deer rifle about 10 p.m. Tuesday, ending a 4½-hour confrontation with police.

Earlier Tuesday evening, Wilcock's father had told police his son was upset over a recent breakup and was threatening suicide. An officer spotted Wilcock at the mouth of Cedar Canyon about 6:30 p.m., driving back into Cedar City.

Wilcock's small SUV was stopped about five blocks later, near 200 E. Center Street, after officers spiked the tires. Officers cordoned off the area and evacuated nearby homes and businesses while they attempted to talk the man into surrendering.

After several fruitless hours of negotiation, Wilcock suddenly grabbed the rifle from the seat of his car and shot himself. Shortly after that, police tossed two flash-bang grenades as a precaution and rushed in to take the wounded Wilcock into custody, Robinson said.
