RSL: Defender Borchers agrees to new deal
Defender Nat Borchers has signed a contract extension with Real Salt Lake though the 2014 season, the sides announced Monday, becoming the fifth player on the team to agree to a new deal since last season.
"I believe we have something very special happening with this team right now," Borchers said. "Before these talks started, I came to the club and told them that I didn't want to play anywhere other than here, so I'm thankful we got a deal done and am looking forward to helping out the team in any way I can."
The 29-year-old center back has been an anchor on the RSL back line, winning Major League Soccer Best XI honors last season while helping the team allow a record-low 20 goals in 30 regular-season game. He played all but 27 minutes of the regular season.
Borchers and goalkeeper Nick Rimando are among the players who signed new deals to remain with RSL through 2014, while fellow central defender Jamison Olave, the MLS Defender of the Year, is under contract through 2012.
Forwards Alvaro Saborio and Paulo Junior also agreed to new contracts.
The team is scheduled to return this week from its second preseason training camp in Arizona, and will make its final preparations for its quarterfinal games in the CONCACAF Champions League against the Columbus Crew on Feb. 22.
