South Ogden • The man shot and killed by police here Thursday had a nonviolent criminal record.

Brent Marlin Imes, 49, had felony convictions in Utah for burglary, theft and forgery, court records show. Police shot and killed Imes at a South Ogden apartment building Thursday morning.

Eric Rendon, who lives at the four-plex apartments at 4344 Adams Ave., said he woke up to arguing and gunshots just before 10 a.m.

"I was just in shock," Rendon said, who added he then opened his door to see what had happened and saw a man lying on the ground about 4 feet away. "I went outside, and we just saw the body laying here and officers pulling up outside."

A few steps away from the man — who Rendon said looked disheveled — was a kennel with a dog in it and a piece of luggage the man had been carrying.

Rendon said he was told by police that the officer was trying to talk to the man and an argument erupted. The man pulled out a gun, pointed it at the officer and fired a shot, Rendon said. The officer then fired several return shots.

South Ogden police spokeswoman Marci Edwards confirmed a Imes pulled a weapon on an officer and fired about 9:50 a.m. The officer returned fire, she said. It appears the gunfire exchange took place near the carport of the four-plex.

Edwards said police do not know why Imes was in the area. She said South Ogden police have no record of encountering him before. Court records show Imes had recent addresses in Ogden and Logan.

Rendon also didn't know what the man was doing in the complex.

"He doesn't live here," Rendon said. "He had a suitcase and a dog in a kennel with him, and a gun obviously, and so I don't know what his motive was for coming in here."

Imes died at Ogden Regional Medical Center.

The officer involved in the shooting has served the South Ogden Police Department for about 10 years. He has been placed on paid administrative leave per department policy, Edwards said.
