A west-side Salt Lake City Interstate 215 exit was shut down Thursday afternoon because of a small chemical spill, the Utah Highway Patrol said.
UHP Trooper Todd Johnson said the freeway's northbound off-ramp to California Avenue (1300 South) was shut down while experts from Envirocare cleaned up sodium hydrosulfide.
Salt Lake City Fire Capt. Michael Harp said about five gallons of the chemical leaked from a truck that had originated in Tooele and was about to make a delivery to a local business.
"There were no injuries, and this spill was small enough that it doesn't pose a public health hazard. It smells like rotten eggs, though, and in larger amounts can cause skin and eye irritation," Harp said.
The 12:30 p.m. spill extended over a large area from the off-ramp onto California Avenue, making cleanup efforts painstakingly slow, Harp said.
The truck driver noticed the top of the load wasn't secure and pulled to the side of the road to fix it when he noticed the spill, police said.
