A man who was found tied and hanging in a bathroom in a Midvale Motel 6 last week has recanted his story.

Midvale police are "not pursuing any more leads" said Midvale police Sgt. Torin Chambers. He added that the incident was not gang-related, and was not associated with an alleged kidnapping and attempted murder on Jan. 7 in which a man was taken from the same hotel to Grantsville and shot at by a group of people.

"He recanted his story and we are not looking for any suspects in that case," Chambers said

Police would not provide any further details as to why the man changed his story.

On Jan 13, police were called to the motel at 7213 S. Catalpa Road about 12:30 p.m. after a maid heard someone threatening to kill someone in one of the rooms, said Midvale police Sgt. Marcelo Rapela.

Officers arrived and found a door to the room open and a 21-year-old Latino man in the shower. He had his hands and feet tied. A belt wrapped around his neck was tethered to a shower handle, Rapela said. He was alive, but he kept passing out.

The man was rushed by ambulance to a local hospital where he was taken in critical condition, but has since recovered.

The man's wife had reported him missing the previous night.
