A 35-year-old man was under the influence of drugs and driving a truck whose windows were so frosted over he could not properly see when his vehicle struck another vehicle, killing the driver, according to police documents.

Shane Gillette, 35, was arrested by Salt Lake City police on suspicion of negligent homicide manslaughter and booked into the Salt Lake County jail Thursday night, said Detective Dennis McGowan.

Gillette was booked into jail after being released from the hospital where he was recovering from serious injuries he received in the Jan. 6 crash on 500 South and 300 East that killed 26-year-old Julie Ann Jorgenson.

McGowan said investigators believe Gillette's GMC pickup had a lot of frost on the windshield during the 5:15 a.m. crash and he was straddling two lanes of traffic before he struck Jorgenson's Mazda sedan. A witness reported his truck was traveling at "highway" speeds just before the crash. The posted speed limit is 30 mph.

Jorgenson's car caught fire, and the state medical examiner found she died instantly, according to jail booking documents. Her body was badly burned.

The documents do not indicate which drug Gillette is suspected of having used before the crash.
