House Democrats have hired former journalist and Salt Lake County Council candidate Holly Mullen to be the spokeswoman for their caucus during the upcoming legislative session.

"Holly comes to us with excellent communication skills from her three decades as a newswoman, and with practical political experience, as well," House Minority Leader David Litvack, D-Salt Lake City, said in a statement.

Mullen is married to Ted Wilson, the former Salt Lake City mayor who currently serves as Republican Gov. Gary Herbert's senior environmental adviser.

Mullen will manage the House Democrats' message during the 2011 year, coordinating mainstream media and managing the caucus' social networking and website. After losses in the recent election, Democrats hold just 17 of the 75 House seats.

Mullen earned a communications degree from the University of Utah and worked for The Salt Lake Tribune from 1997 to 2007. She was editor of the Salt Lake City Weekly and also worked for newspapers in Ogden; Spokane, Wash.; Minneapolis and Dallas.
