The owner of two Logan restaurants has been charged with failing to turn over to the state several hundred thousand dollars' worth of sales and payroll taxes.

Justin Hamilton, 31, owner of Cafe Sabor and Hamilton's Steak and Seafood in Logan, was charged last week with four felony counts of unlawful dealing of property by a fiduciary.

Utah State Tax Commission investigators said Hamilton received several hundred thousand dollars in customers' sales taxes and also withheld several thousand dollars in employees' payroll taxes but failed to turn them over to the state and used them for illegal purposes.

"Our criminal investigation unit diligently investigates the theft and fraud of taxpayer funds," Tax Commission spokesman Charlie Roberts said. "The Tax Commission is committed to prevent perpetrators from unfairly profiting to the detriment of other business owners."
