A house owned by basketball great Julius Erving in St. George has gone into foreclosure proceedings after being on the market for more than a year.
The real estate agent who brokered the deal for the house when Erving purchased it in 2004 said Friday she is not involved in the foreclosure, but that Erving has not lived in the area for a couple of years, and now resides in Atlanta.
"It's a loss to the community," said Cindy Campbell.
According to records with the Washington County Recorder's Office, a notice of default was filed on the property on July 14, 2009, and again on Nov. 8, 2010.
The 6,572-square-foot, five-bedroom house located in a gated community is valued at more than $2 million and has many oversized features, including an enormous bath tub to hold the frame of the former National Basketball Association player and Hall-of-Famer who earned the nickname "Dr. J."
One of the more unusual features of the house is a rubberized basketball court in the red, white and blue colors of his former team, the Philadelphia 76ers.
Earlier this year, St. George Mayor Dan McArthur praised the congenial spirit of Erving.
Erving was awarded the key to the city and one year threw the switch to light the city's Christmas decorations.
