A Florida woman remained in critical condition late Thursday, two days after she was struck by a hit-and-run driver at a dark Midvale intersection.

Midvale police Sgt. Marcelo Rapela said the family of Janice Vargas, 30, was believed en route to Utah to be at her Intermountain Medical Center bedside.

Vargas, whose hometown was not known, was hit about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday near 7200 South and 50 West. The intersection does not have marked crosswalks. The driver of an eastbound car told investigators she did not see the woman on the darkened street in time to stop.

Police initially were calling the incident an accident, and no citations were issued. The driver appeared to have been following the speed limit and there was no determination of alcohol being involved.
