EnergySolutions Inc. has asked for an extension to submit a report on how suitable its site is for large quantities of depleted uranium.

The report was due Dec. 31, but the Salt Lake City-based nuclear waste service company wants another two months, in part to take into account the input received during a series of scoping meetings that have taken place this year.

"During these meetings, stakeholders provided valuable input as to their expectations for the PA [engineering performance assessment]," said company spokesman Dale Didion. "We are updating the PA based on those comments and concerns."

The state's Radiation Control Division will review the company's latest engineering review with an eye to ensuring that the risk posed by DU, which has the unusual quality of becoming more hazardous over time, will be contained under various scenarios, including a rise in the Great Salt Lake.
