Cedar City — A 9-month-old girl was killed and three young boys and a female driver were critically injured when the van they were in was struck by a garbage truck.

Cedar City police Sgt. JR Robinson said the victim, Angellee Stubbs was in a car seat in the back of the van about 12:30 p.m. Monday when the garbage truck struck the driver's side, killing her. An 11-year-old boy and two 2-year-old boys, both in car seats, were taken to Valley View Medical Center where they remained in critical condition Tuesday.

Two men in the garbage truck also were taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Robinson said the crash occurred at the intersection of 3000 North and State Route 130.

Cedar City resident Elice Lane said she was behind the van, which was attempting to turn left onto 3000 North.

"She then changed her mind and went straight, but the light had turned," said Lane.

The truck tried to swerve from the van but clipped it, then turned on its side and continued to push the van, Lane said. She said four men ran to the van and broke out a window and were able to remove two of the children.Preston Cluett, of New Castle, had just turned off westbound 3000 North onto the highway and saw the garbage truck strike the van in his rear view mirror.

He tried to help, and a passing paramedic from Las Vegas used a fire extinguisher to break the back window, said Cluett. He said he helped remove the older boy from the van, then supported the woman's head, which was wedged between the driver and passenger seats, until emergency crews arrived.

"I'm still shaking," he said. - Reporter Bob Mims contributed to this story
