On Tuesday, the Salt Lake City School District plans to vote on amending its anti-discrimination policy to ban acts of bias based on a person's sexual orientation.

The district believes it would be the first in Utah to do so.

Advocates for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community have asked that the Board of Education go further and also add gender identity and expression to the policy to protect students and employees who are transgender or who express their gender in ways that differ from social norms.

The school board meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. with a vote on the anti-discrimination policy scheduled for 8:05 p.m. The board meets at district offices, 440 E. 100 South, Salt Lake City.

Last year, Salt Lake City became the first city in Utah to pass ordinances that prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in housing and employment decisions. Eight additional Utah cities and counties have adopted similar statutes.
