A man was taken to a hospital in critical condition after accidentally shooting himself in the chest early Monday.

At about 3:21 a.m., the man thought he heard an intruder in his apartment near 900 East and 500 South. He grabbed his .22 semi-automatic pistol and a flashlight. When he attempted to turn on the flashlight, he accidentally shot himself in the chest, said Sgt. Shawn Josephson of the Salt Lake City Police Department.

The man was able to call 911. Police arrived to find him alone and critically injured.

There was no sign that anyone had attempted to burglarize the apartment, Josephson said.
