Some Brigham Young University students will return from Thanksgiving break on Monday to soggy dorms.

On Wednesday afternoon, construction workers punctured a 20-inch water line while working on a housing expansion north of Heritage Halls. The water spilled into Heritage Halls for nearly two hours, flooding 10 basement apartments. Three to six students live in each apartment.

Most students already had left the dorms for the long holiday weekend, BYU spokeswoman Carri Jenkins said. Fewer than five will need to be relocated during Thanksgiving break.

The school plans to remove the water, which is up to a foot deep in some areas, by Monday. Jenkins said she did not know whether the dorms will be able to be occupied on Monday.

BYU expects to open the housing addition, which includes four buildings and room for 800 students, in fall 2011.
