As the holiday season approaches, Utah businesses and nonprofit organizations seek help to provide goods and services they supply during the holiday season. Groups already seeking donations of time, money and specific items include:

Woodrow Wilson Elementary • Is in need of ski clothes for students. For information, e-mail slidd@sslchamber.com.

Candy Cane Corner • is an opportunity for low-income families and individuals who are participating in programs at the YWCA, The Road Home, and Volunteers of America, Utah to select new holiday gifts for themselves and their families. Assistance is needed with donations and volunteering. Donations are being accepted at the Candy Cane Corner holiday store location: 2526 S. 300 West. Donation drop-off times are Monday through Friday, noon to 7 p.m. and Saturday or Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. For more information, call 801-363-9414 x104.

Holiday Gift Box • Donors are needed to adopt over 500 low-income individuals with intellectual disabilities. Officials are currently putting new applicants on waiting lists until more donors volunteer. More than 300 Utahns, who are featured in ornaments at the UAID office, have yet to be helped. Volunteers of America • VOA of Utah needs waterproof gloves, hats (in dark colors), sleeping bags, new men's socks, men's winter clothes and winter jackets (size large or higher). Donations can be brought to the organization's office at 511 W. 200 South No. 160 Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, go to http://www.voaut.org or call 801-363-9414.

"Shoes For Haiti" Real Salt Lake and KUTV2 are accepting new and gently used athletic shoes, through Dec. 21, to be dropped off at the following: The RSL Team Store at Rio Tinto Stadium, 9256 S. State St. (northeast corner of stadium), 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Saturday; KUTV2 News Studio, 299 S. Main St. (Wells Fargo Building), 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. Operation Coverup • Salt Lake County firefighters' annual blanket and coat drive will collect new or gently used items through Jan. 1 at any city or county fire station for distribution to community agencies.

American Red Cross Holiday Giving Catalog • Give something in the name of your friends and family through the 2010 Red Cross Holiday Giving Catalog. A $50 donation provides a full day of emergency shelter for one disaster victim; this includes three meals, a cot, and personal supplies. Or $30 can wrap five children in warm, cozy blankets to protect them from the cold, and help them sleep comfortably in our shelters. Forgotten Patient Christmas Project • Sponsor a forgotten patient at the Utah State Hospital by requesting a name by contacting the Volunteer Services Office at 801-344-4254 or at speterson@utah.gov. The information for a specific person will be sent out through the mail or by e-mail. The information will include the patient's first name and last initial along with their clothing sizes, hobbies, favorite candy and a wish list with three or four items that the patient would like to receive. We ask the sponsors to wrap the gifts and label them with the patient's name and unit number.

Adopt a Native Elder's Wish List • This holiday season, Adopt a Native Elder (ANE) needs warming hearts contributions, money for firewood to help families make it through the winter, food certificate contributions,(ANE buys $25 and $50 certificates at a 5 percent discount from grocery stores) and new blankets. Toys for Tots Toy Drive • Bring an unwrapped new toy to Tracy Aviary between Dec. 1-31 and receive one free admission. Toy donations will go to the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation. For information, visit http://www.tracyaviary.org.

Harmons Grocery Store • Harmons 13th Annual Gift for a Gift Turkey Drive along with customers, donated 8.000 turkeys to the Utah Food Bank for needy families.

The International Thespian Society • Troupe 3635 at Bingham High School, collected 1,078 pounds of food for local charitable food programs.

Northrop Grumman Corporation • Volunteers donated over 100 handmade bags containing toiletries, snacks and entertainemt to Operation Adopt-A-Ghost, designed for soldiers overseas, in November. On Dec. 9, the company's employee resource group prepared and catered a dinner to 120 local families with children who are members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Salt Lake.

McGillis School • Students made a $4,500 monetary contribution and 1,700 pounds of food to The Utah Food Bank, as of Dec. 17.

Hildegarde's food pantry • 231 E. 100 South; must pre-register from Dec. 1 to Dec. 22 at the food pantry, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., Thursday 5-6:30 p.m.; pick up is Dec. 23, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.; adults need picture ID.

Salvation Army • St. Vincent De Paul, 437 W. 200 South; Dec. 25, Bible study, meal afterward.

Eagle Ranch Chuck Wagon • Under the 500 S. 600 West viaduct; Dec. 25, 8 a.m.-2 p.m.; call 801-245-4945 and leave all information on the prayer line.

Salt Lake Mission • Christian Life Church, 1051 N. Redwood Road; Dec. 25 and Jan. 1, bus pick up at 7 a.m., bus runs every half hour. Meal is from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

Good Samaritan (sack lunch) • 347 E. South Temple; 9 a.m.-8 p.m. For more information call 801-328-2561.

Subway of Utah • Has partnered with students at North Layton Junior High School, Layton, to host "SUBWAY Santa: Kids Helping Kids Toy Drive" to raise toys for approximately 100 children at the Boys and Girls Club (BGC) Marshall White Center in Ogden.

Walmart, Utah Food Bank and GiftCard Bäks • Their goal is to bring awareness to Walmart's Fighting Hunger Together campaign which will award funds to nonprofits fighting food insecurity in the city that records the most votes on Walmart's Fighting Hunger Together website. Utahns should vote for Salt Lake City from a list of 100 communities where hunger rates are the highest. The city with the most support will receive $1 million in grants and the next five cities with the highest support will receive $100,000 each. Salt Lake City is currently in 17th place.
