Preservationists and digital technology experts at the University of Utah's Marriott Library have preserved, digitized and made accessible the original 1895 Utah Constitution.

The Utah State Archives and Records Service, where the document resides, recently completed an archival assessment that found the constitution was in stable condition with the exception of its binding, which needed to be restored.

The State Archives relied on experts at the U. of U. to preserve the document, state archivist Ken Williams said in a statement.

Experts then digitized it to make it accessible on the Marriott Library websites along with other historical statutes digitized earlier.

The project is an example of the Marriott Library's changing role, Joyce Ogburn, the library dean, said in a statement.

" No longer are we simply repositories for books; we are now digitizing, creating scholarship and collaborating with other organizations to preserve some of our most treasured items."
