Customers at a Sandy Deseret Industries store Tuesday chased and tackled a registered sex offender who allegedly lured a 4-year-old girl into the store bathroom and raped her.

The girl was shopping with her family about 1:30 p.m. at the DI store, 727 E. 9400 South, when Richard Chad Randall, 41, asked her to walk with him to the toy section of the store, police wrote in a press statement. The girl's mother noticed her disappearance and searched the store, police wrote. The mother found the girl with Randall in the men's bathroom, police wrote.

Randall left the store, but other customers kept him pinned until police arrived.

Police interviewed the child, said Sandy police Sgt. Troy Arnold. Based on that interview, police booked Randall into jail on suspicion of rape of a child, aggravated sexual abuse of a child and aggravated kidnapping.

Randall in 1998 pleaded guilty to attempted sexual abuse of a child, a second-degree felony that was amended to a misdemeanor.
