St. George police Friday were heralding the arrests of two California men and seizure of a large quantity of heroin.

Capt. James Van Fleet said the suspects, both of Lake Elsinore, Calif., were stopped on Interstate 15 in St. George about 1:10 a.m. after an officer ran their vehicle information through law enforcement records and learned it was not insured.

"During the traffic stop, answers to questions from [the suspects] were not consistent," Van Fleet said. A drug-sniffing dog was called to the scene and soon "alerted" on the vehicle, he added.

A subsequent search turned up more than 10 pounds of heroin secreted in the rear of the vehicle. Van Fleet said the drugs have an estimated street value of about $900,000.

The suspects remained in Washington County jail Friday, where they had been booked for investigation of numerous drug-related charges. Bail was set at $500,000 for each of them.
