The Westview Women's Clinic in West Valley City has abruptly closed after an employee was arrested for practicing medicine without a license, leaving its pregnant patients in the lurch.
The man was arrested Aug. 18. The arrest warrant accused him of "unlawful practice of medicine," a third-degree felony, for allegedly presenting himself as a licensed radiologist. The probable cause statement says he allegedly performed and interpreted ultrasound screenings at the clinic, 3451 S. 5600 West.
On the same day, a search warrant was executed by the Utah Medicaid Fraud Control Unit of the Attorney General's Office, agents from the Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing and the Utah Department of Health, according to a statement by the Attorney General's Office.
That office is still investigating medical billings submitted by the clinic to the Medicaid program and declined further comment.
The separately owned West Valley Family Medicine clinic, which provides prenatal care, is trying to accommodate Westview's former patients.
Lois Murphy, business manager for the company that owns the West Valley Family Medicine clinic, said some of her employees went to the Westview location Tuesday to see how they could help once they learned the clinic was closing.
"They said we couldn't post any notices that we would be happy to take care of the women," she said.
She instead left fliers at a neighboring urgent care clinic, where some of the patients were apparently going. She said about 25 women have called her clinic to seek care.
"They're just confused and a lot of them don't speak English. They're scared. They don't know where else to go," Murphy said. "Our worst fear is they go home and don't get any prenatal care and show up to deliver. ... That's not a good start."
