Catherine Smith-Warner, the Utah Valley University ballet student hit by an allegedly impaired driver on a Springville street corner last week, may one day dance again.
"[The doctors] are pretty sure she will be able to resume dancing," said Jeremy Warner, Smith-Warner's husband, on Wednesday.
Smith-Warner, a senior majoring in ballet, sustained a broken leg, a broken nose and facial injuries. She is being treated for her injuries at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center, Warner said.
He said the family has received an outpouring of support from friends and Smith-Warner's classmates, as well as from the community. Smith-Warner's ballet professor, Shayla Bott, and several of her classmates visited Smith-Warner at the hospital.
The couple had no health insurance. A fund has been set up at Zions Bank to help cover Smith-Warner's medical expenses. Those who wish to donate can make contributions at any bank branch to the "Catey Smith-Warner Fund."
Justin Thomas Hicken, who police allege was driving the car that hit Smith-Warner, faces a third-degree felony charge of driving under the influence of drugs in 4th District Court, as well as charges of drug possession and possession of drug paraphernalia within 1,000 feet of a school. Police say Smith-Warner was standing at the southwest corner of 400 South and Main Street in Springville on Aug. 25 when a northbound SUV crossed the center line, went up on the sidewalk, stuck Smith-Warner and stopped on the northwest corner of the intersection.
Springville Police Lt. David Caron said Hicken tested positive for drugs after the accident. He said Hicken had been in the city's Justice Court the day before on charges of driving under the influence of drugs. In that case, Hicken had also driven his car off the road, Caron said.
