A father and his two young daughters were killed Wednesday morning when an SUV spun out of control, rolled and crashed on Interstate 15 near the Utah County town of Santaquin.
Utah Highway Patrol spokesman Todd Johnson identified those who died as the driver, Edgar Ramirez, 32, and his daughters, Helen Giselle Munoz, 11, and Stephanie Roxette Ramirez Munoz, 4.
Three other passengers in the SUV were injured. Ramirez's wife, Helen Concepcion Ramirez, also 32, was flown to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo, where she was reported to be in serious condition. A 6-year-old daughter, Josefina Isabel Ramirez Munoz, was in critical condition at Primary Children's Medical Center in Salt Lake City. A 1-year-old girl, Eliana Ramirez, was in serious condition, also at Primary Children's.
Mirna Guadalupe Hererra met the Ramirez family when her family moved into the same Provo apartment complex a year ago. "They were a good couple and family," Hererra said. "They were so nice."
She said her children played with the Ramirez children, and that Edgar Ramirez was "a good guy."
Hererra said the Ramirez family had gone to California to see relatives and were supposed to have been home Wednesday.
One of the neighbors, who would only identify herself as "Susie R.," said her son played with the older Ramirez children. She said Stephanie Ramirez was a friendly girl. "She played with all the kids," Susie recalled. "She was like the mother hen."
The accident occurred about 2:25 a.m. when the northbound SUV swerved from the right lane and then Ramirez apparently overcorrected and spun left into the freeway's median. The vehicle rolled, tumbling through the median and southbound lanes before landing on a frontage road.
The three victims died at the scene.
"We're looking at the possibility of fatigue and drowsiness contributing to the accident, but it is still under investigation and we haven't made a final determination," Johnson said.
It took UHP troopers and emergency responders an hour and a half to clear the southbound lanes of wreckage and reopen that section of the freeway to travel.
