Centerville police investigating a tip that someone was moving into a vacant home without the owner's permission ended up seizing a large cache of marijuana.

Now, says Centerville police Lt. Paul Child, the would-be occupant has found a new place to dwell: the Davis County Jail.

Child said officers were called to the residence in the 400 block of North Main Street on Wednesday night. Police allegedly found a 28-year-old Salt Lake City man was about to move some personal items into the home.

"Officers immediately smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from the [man's] BMW sport utility vehicle and the utility trailer that was attached," Child said.

A drug-sniffing dog brought to the scene indicated the trailer might have drugs, and officers found a large garbage bag filled with fresh-cut marijuana plants.

The Davis County Metro Narcotics Task Force joined the investigation, and after obtaining a search warrant for the vehicle, police found six mature marijuana plants, four more large garbage bags full of fresh-cut marijuana, containers filled with marijuana buds and drug paraphernalia.

The man insisted the marijuana was for his personal use.

He was booked into jail on suspicion of marijuana cultivation, possession of marijuana with intent to sell and possession of paraphernalia, Child said.

In all, 38 pounds of marijuana, and 32 marijuana plants were seized.

He remained in jail Thursday in lieu of $100,000 bail.
