A South Jordan police officer is recovering after surgery on a gunshot wound suffered during a raid by multiple law-enforcement agencies at a South Salt Lake apartment.
Stevan Gerber, a 5-year South Jordan Police Department veteran and SWAT officer, was in surgery for about six hours Thursday at Intermountain Medical Center. South Jordan police Lt. Matt Evans said Gerber "is expected to make a full recovery. I was able to speak to him before he went into surgery and he was in high spirits, and his family was with him."
After the operation, Gerber was reported to be in fair and stable condition.
Gerber was part of a U.S. Marshals-led Joint Criminal Apprehension Team serving an arrest warrant on an apartment near 3100 South and 300 East just before 1 a.m. South Salt Lake police Sgt. Gary Keller said the subject of the warrant, identified as Troy Cabibi, 29, was wanted for a parole violation.
"JCAT had confirmed the arrest subject was in the apartment, announced themselves, and as they made [forcible] entry they were fired on. That's when [Gerber] was shot in the leg," Keller said.
"The team continued inside with no shots fired in return by JCAT, and took two males and a female with an infant into custody." A subsequent search of the apartment area turned up two handguns. Forensic testing will be done to determine whether either weapon was used in the shooting.
Utah Department of Corrections records show Cabibi had been sentenced to 1 to 15 years for manslaughter in the 1998 shooting death of Arcides Saldigan, 21, in the parking lot of a Midvale convenience store. Cabibi was paroled in July 2009.
The arrest warrant JCAT was serving stemmed from substance abuse allegations. Specifically, according to Utah Board of Pardons and Parole spokesman Jim Hatch, a warrant for Cabibi's arrest was issued Aug. 18, alleging he had used methamphetamine while driving, and had failed to complete required substance-abuse therapy.
Cabibi was booked into the Salt Lake County jail on Thursday on suspicion of attempted aggravated homicide related to the shooting of Gerber. Keller said state and federal prosecutors would decide what charges are forthcoming.
The second man arrested, Bradley Boatright-Olmos, 18, also was booked on suspicion of attempted aggravated homicide. Keller said the woman was released with her child after questioning.
