Utah County crash kills passengers from Texas and Missouri

Two people died Saturday in a crash in Spanish Fork Canyon.

Joyce Finley, 75, of Lebanon, Mo., and James Staneart, 52, of Dublin, Texas, died at the scene. The crash occurred about 8:15 a.m., eight miles east of Spanish Fork.

The pair were passengers in a Pontiac Vibe traveling east on U.S. Highway 6. The Utah Highway Patrol said the driver fell asleep and the Vibe drifted into the oncoming lane and collided with a semi. The Vibe spun off the roadway. A helicopter flew the car’s driver to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center with neck and back injuries. The semi driver suffered minor injuries.

UHP said Finley was wearing a seat belt, but Staneart was sleeping and unbuckled in the rear of the car. The three people in the Pontiac were traveling to Oregon from Texas, UHP said.
