Cyprus juniors give future hope

Cyprus took Clearfield into double overtime on Thursday, but fell just short of claiming its first win of the season. Three Cyprus players scored in double figures in the losing effort. The Pirates’ season finale was on Tuesday against East. In what was very much a rebuilding season, the Pirates have reason to be encouraged about next year. Juniors Connor Squire and Austin Henriod stepped up and carried the scoring load. Squire led the team with 12.75 points per game and Henriod added 7.85 per game.

Valladolid’s 25 too little for Granger

Junior guard Mo Valladolid scored 25 points for Granger against Kearns on Thursday, but the Lancers dropped the game to the Cougars in overtime. The loss eliminated Granger from playoff contention. The Lancers wrapped up the year at Hunter on Tuesday. This was a season that Granger envisioned going differently, but it caught some bad breaks. Losing senior Isaiah Tademy to a wrist injury for a good chunk of the season ended up being too much to overcome.

Hunter finishes No. 2 in Region 2

Since winning the state championship in 2004, Hunter made only one playoff appearance — until this season. The Wolverines are back in the tournament this year, representing Region 2 as the No. 2 seed. They get the third-place team out of Region 4 in the first round, which isn’t a cakewalk. Unfortunately for the Wolverines, their reward for winning their first game would likely be a date with West Jordan in the quarterfinals.

Kearns used a 66-58 overtime win against Granger on Friday to clinch its spot in the state tournament. Junior forward Dayon Goodman had one of the most impressive games in the state this season, scoring 36 points and snagging 17 boards. It will be the Cougars’ first trip to the playoffs since 2006, when they lost to Davis by 30 points in the first round.

Stansbury headed in right direction

Although Stansbury did not make it to the playoffs, it did take some major steps forward. The Stallions set a school record with nine wins, two more than the previous two seasons combined. Senior guard Kirby Harris capped his career by scoring 12.9 points per game. He finished the season ranked 10th in class 3A in 3-pointers made per game with 1.9.

Taylorsville focus turns to future

Any ideas Taylorsville had about miraculously sneaking into the playoffs were dashed as Viewmont doubled up the Warriors, 64-32. Viewmont had five players score at least 7 points in the game, and Taylorsville had no player score more than 6. The Warriors’ promising sophomore class got its final opportunity to build experience on Tuesday when Taylorsville closed out the season against Kearns.
