Summer TV preview: New shows, returning series abound

Network and cable programmers are always talking about year-round scheduling — and there’s more evidence of that than ever this summer.

Not only are there a slew of cable shows, but ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and The CW all have new and returning shows that will air original episodes in May, June, July and August. Here’s a rundown of what to expect:

MONDAY, MAY 26

"MasterChef" (7 p.m., Fox/Ch. 13) • Season 5 of this cooking competition.

"American Ninja Warrior" (8 p.m., NBC/Ch. 5) • Season 6 of this athletic competition begins.

"Hit the Floor" (10 p.m., VH1) • Season 2 of this series about (fictional) NBA cheerleaders begins.

"The World Wars" (7 p.m., History) • Debut of this series about WWI and WWII.

TUESDAY, MAY 27

"Extreme Weight Loss" (7 p.m., ABC/Ch. 4) • Season 4 of this weight-loss show.

"America’s Got Talent" (7 p.m., NBC/Ch. 5) • Season 9 of this talent show.

"Heroes of Cosplay" (7 p.m. Syfy) • New costume competition.

"Little Women L.A." (8 p.m., Lifetime) • New reality show about little people who are celebrity impersonators.

"The Night Shift" (9 p.m., NBC/Ch. 5) • New medical drama.

"The Wil Wheaton Project" (8 p.m., Syfy) • Debut of this show described as "Talk Soup" for geeks.

WEDNESDAY, MAY 28

"So You Think You Can Dance" (7 p.m., Fox/Ch. 13) • Season 11 of this dance competition begins.

THURSDAY, MAY 29

"Undateable" (8 p.m., NBC/Ch. 5) • Chris D’Elia headlines this new sitcom about a bunch of romance-challenged guys.

FRIDAY, MAY 30

"Marriage Boot Camp: Realiy Stars" (7 p.m., WE) • Season 3 of this reality show.

"Mystery Millionaire" (8 p.m., WE) • New reality show about a fitness guru looking for love.

"Crossbones" (9 p.m., NBC/Ch. 5) • New pirate series, based on the life of Blackbeard.

"Derek" (Netflix): Season 2 of Ricky Gervais’ comedy begins.

SATURDAY, MAY 31

"Bet on Your Baby" (7 p.m., ABC/Ch. 4) • Season 2 of this reality/competition show begins.

"Sing Your Face Off" (8 p.m., ABC/Ch. 4) • New talent competition.

SUNDAY, JUNE 1

"Halt and Catch Fire" (8 p.m., AMC) • New drama set in the early days of the computer revolution — the early 1980s.

"The Next Food Network Star" (10 p.m., Food Network) • Season 10 of this cooking competition begins.

"Return to Amish" (10 p.m., TLC) • New reality show, a spinoff of "Breaking Amish."

MONDAY, JUNE 2

"Copycat" (7:30 p.m., MTV) • New singing competition.

"Beauty and the Beast" (8 p.m., CW/Ch. 30) • The CW begins airing the last six episodes of Season 2.

"Mistresses" (9 p.m., ABC/Ch. 4) • Season 2 of this prime-time soap begins.

"Longmire" (11 p.m., A&E) • Season 3 of this crime drama.

TUESDAY, JUNE 3

"Famous In 12" (7 p.m., CW/Ch. 30) • New reality show about a family that moves to L.A. determined to become famous.

"Top Gear" (7 p.m., History) • Season 5 of this automobile show.

"Siberian Cut" (11 p.m., Discovery) • New reality series about an American logger in Russia.

"Jennifer Falls" (11:30 p.m., TV Land) • New sitcom about a woman (Jaime Pressly) who has to move back in with her mother (Jessica Walter).

"It Takes a Church" (7 p.m., GSN) • New dating show in which Christian congregations play matchmaker.

"Orange Is the New Black" (Netflix) • Season 2 of this comedy.

SATURDAY, JUNE 7

"Life with LaToya" (11 p.m., OWN) • Season 2 of this fake reality show.

"Power" (10 p.m., Starz) • New drama about a nightclub owner/drug dealer.

SUNDAY, JUNE 8

"Keeping Up with the Kardashians" (8 p.m., E!) • The second half of Season 8 of this fake reality show.

"The Hunt" (8 p.m., History) • New reality series about bear hunting.

"Frankenfood" (8 p.m., Spike) • New food competition.

"Sister Wives" (10 p.m., TLC) • Season 5 of this reality/polygamy show.

"Escape Club" (11 p.m., E!) • A dozen 20-somethings abandon their lives to live in paradise.

"Murder in the First" (9 p.m., TNT) • New crime drama that follows a single case through the season.

"Pretty Little Liars" (9 p.m., ABC Family) • Season 5 of this mystery/drama.

"Royal Pains" (10 p.m., USA) • Season 5 of this medical comedy/drama.

"Chasing Life" (10 p.m., ABC Family) • New family drama centered on a young woman diagnosed with cancer.

"Taxi Brooklyn (9 p.m., NBC/Ch. 5) • New police drama — a European import.

"Young and Hungry" (9 p.m., ABC Family) • Comedy about a young food blogger (Emily Osment) trying to land a job as a personal chef to a wealthy entrepreneur.

"Wilfred" (11 p.m., FX) • The fourth (and final) season begins.

"Mystery Girls" (9:30 p.m., ABC Family) • Tori Spelling and Jennie Garth ("Beverly Hills, 90210) star as former TV detectives who become real detectives in this comedy.

"Girl Meets World" (7:45 p.m., Disney) • New sitcom that’s a sequel to the long-running "Boy Meets World."

"Last Tango in Halifax" (7 p.m., PBS/Ch. 7) • Season 2 of this drama.
