A wide range of musical performers — from a legendary hip-hop group to a chameleonic multi-instrumental genius — will bring the noise to Pioneer Park this summer, as part of the annual Twilight Concert Series.

Salt Lake City officials announced the line-up Thursday, a list of eight Thursday-night concerts starting July 10 that include retro soul, indie pop, R&B and eclectic art rock.

Mayor Ralph Becker called the series at Pioneer Park, at the corner of 300 South and 300 West in downtown Salt Lake City, one of the events "that make this city a great place to live, work and play.… It brings incredible dynamism to our city."

The series begins July 10 with Ms. Lauryn Hill, the singer/rapper best known for her work with The Fugees and for her 1998 solo album "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill." Opening the show is funk/jazz bassist Thundercat.

Jesse Schaefer, performing-arts program manager for the Salt Lake City Arts Council and the man newly in charge of the Twilight series, said the acts most likely to generate excitement are: Wu Tang Clan, the legendary New York hip-hop collective that recently marked its 20th anniversary; and Beck, the multi-talented genre-shifting alt-rock singer-songwriter.

Here’s the rest of the schedule:

July 17 » TV on the Radio, art-rock band. Opening act: Twin Shadow, synth-pop performer.

July 24 » Charles Bradley and His Extraordinaires, retro soul/funk band. Opening act: The Budos Band, Afro-soul instrumental band.

July 31 » Wu Tang Clan, hip-hop legends. Opening act: Run the Jewels, hip-hop duo.

Aug. 7 » Local Natives, indie-pop band. Opening act: To be announced.

Aug. 14 » Beck, multi-instrumental alt-rock star. Opening act: Future Islands, synth-pop band.

Aug. 21 » De La Soul, pioneering alternative hip-hop trio. Opening act: To be announced.

Aug. 28 » The Head and the Heart, indie folk-rock band (previously announced). Opening act: To be announced.

Schaefer, who took over from series founder Casey Jarman this year, said the series is "established and really successful," and he wasn’t planning on too many changes to the format this summer.

One change will be good news for local bands. The series will feature performances by three winners, still to be determined, of the City Weekly Music Awards.

"We’re really excited to build and enhance our ties to the local music scene," Schaefer said.
