New owners, same food for Caffe Niche in Salt Lake City
Customers likely will not notice any changes at Caffe Niche, 779 E. 300 South, as chef Ethan Lappe is still a partner in the business and will continue to oversee the menu and the day-to-day business, a spokesperson said.
It's the second restaurant the LaSalle group has purchased in as many years. In 2013, it took over the venerable Kyoto, 1080 E. 1300 South. Sam and Yoshiko Tada, who opened the restaurant in 1984, also remain active in day-to-day operations. However, the new arrangement allows the seniors to "take some much deserved rest," their website states.
The LaSalle Group says they are committed to "having each entity stand alone as a strong independent concept." But by working together, the restaurants can benefit from efficiencies, namely in purchasing, that come with a larger operation.
The LaSalle Group was started by Joel and Jill LaSalle, who began their business in 2001 with the purchase of the Oasis Cafe and Golden Braid Books, 151 S. 500 East, Salt Lake City. Several years later, they opened Faustina, 454 E. 300 South.
For a short time, the group also owned Carvers Steak and Seafood in Sandy.
