Director Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck honor some of Disney’s animated traditions (fairy-tale setting, stunning artwork, Broadway-ready song score) and upend others (reimagining the "evil" queen and the charming prince) in this lively, heartfelt tale of two princesses — one (voiced by Idina Menzel) who has kept her ice powers hidden, the other (voiced by Kristen Bell) seeking to restore the bond with her sister.
The princesses are nicely bolstered by richly drawn characters such as the rugged Kristoff (voiced by Jonathan Groff) and the living snowman Olaf (voiced by Josh Gad).
The real stars, though, are songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, who deliver the goods — especially with Menzel’s showstopper.
