DVD • Matt Smith gets a satisfactory send-off as the Eleventh Doctor in "Doctor Who: The Time of the Doctor."

The special episode, which aired at Christmas, lands The Doctor on the planet Trenzalore, where (we've been told earlier) he's fated to die. But The Doctor isn't going without a fight, and he spends centuries fending off his old foes the Daleks from destroying the human population there.

Steven Moffat's script is laced with references to The Doctor's past, and concludes with a tantalizing glimpse of his future — in the person of Peter Capaldi, who starts his adventures as the Twelfth Doctor this fall.

Mostly, though, it's a long and energetic goodbye for Smith, who pumped energy and exuberance into the 50-year-old franchise. —
