Grade • D+

DVD • Mix up some "Harry Potter" spell-casting with some "Twilight" romantic complications and "Percy Jackson"-level mythologizing, and you get the derivative "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones."

Adapted from the first of author Cassandra Clare's five-book series, it follows Clary Fray (Lily Collins), who learns that she comes from a magical lineage — as she enters the realm of Shadowhunters, who battle evil demons in Manhattan unnoticed by "mundanes" (translation: "muggles").

Clary finds her heart torn between longtime human friend Simon (Robert Sheehan) and hunky Shadowhunter Jace (Jamie Campbell Bower), as she joins the fight against the evil Valentine (Jonathan Rhys Meyers).

The action is chaotic, and overly reliant on so-so computer effects. —
