Grade • C

DVD • You know you've set yourself up for failure — as "The Smurfs 2" does — when your entire animated enterprise hinges on the emotional journey of a character voiced by Katy Perry.

The "Roar" singer provides the vocals for Smurfette, who must discover whether she's a true Smurf or just one of evil Gargamel's creations when the mean old sorcerer (Hank Azaria) holds her hostage and she meets other dark-side creations Vexy (voice of Christina Ricci) and Hackus (voice of J.B. Smoove).

Humans Patrick (Neil Patrick Harris) and Grace (Jayma Mays) return among the computer-animated craziness, with a trite reconciliation story involving Patrick's overbearing stepdad — who is played by Brendan Gleeson, the only person here who seems to be having fun. —
