DVD/Bluray • The 50th anniversary of the assassination of John F. Kennedy is on Nov. 22, sparking a round of documentaries about the 35th president of the United States.

One of the best doesn't really deal with the assassination at all — the four-hour "American Experience" documentary, which aired on PBS, is about JFK's life, campaigns, administration and legacy. It's a very good documentary that covers some familiar ground, adds some new insights and neither glorifies nor villifies its subject.

Among the other Kennedy related programming being released this week is "The Day Kennedy Died," a good Smithsonian Channel documentary that is exactly what the title indicates; and another PBS documentary, "Secrets of the Dead: JFK — 1 p.m., Central Standard," which recounts CBS' coverage on the day of the assassination.
