Grade • B+

DVD • Henry Cavill dons the red cape and blue tights (but not the red shorts) as Superman in Zack Snyder's "Man of Steel," and darned if they're not a good fit. Not just physically, though the British hunk is certainly buff, but also in capturing the superhero's natural heroism and the turmoil of his human alter-ego, Clark Kent.

Snyder and screenwriter David S. Goyer keep the camp factor low as they restage the origins of Kal-El, the last son of Krypton, placed in a capsule by his father Jor-El (Russell Crowe) for life on Earth. Guided by the Kents (Kevin Costner, Diane Lane), Clark learns human values, which guide him when Krypton's exiled General Zod (Michael Shannon) comes looking to destroy Earth.

With Amy Adams as a smarter-than-usual Lois Lane, "Man of Steel" is a sharp update on the Superman legend that lays the groundwork for a soaring future. —
